I've been relocated. Again. While this looks like a more cheerful occupation and this is the happier I've seen the Eastern Bloc be in a while, I'd really appreciate the prior notice.

First of all, you've been taken to a town called Mayfield. We're expected to live happy lives here, and we cannot escape. You likely now have a husband and children, too.

Next, there are plenty of people like you and me -- that is, people who were brought here from outside. However, there are also many people who are indigenous to Mayfield. You can always tell them apart, because they act as if they don't have a care in the world.

We call them drones. Try to walk on eggshells around them, because if you're not careful, you'll be brainwashed into a drone yourself.

Within limit. Police Chief Grady is the one who does the brainwashing, and the drones can call him very quickly. And they'll call Grady if they see either any sign of subversive activity or simply not fulfilling the roles we're supposed to fulfill.

It's almost like being a in a doll-like police state.

It is. Very much so.

And it gets worse. Every so often, the town changes somehow. We call these changes "events." One week, they took away all food in the town. Around Christmastime, they first reverted us to younger ages, and then pushed us forward in time ten years. And most recently, the town turned into an exaggerated communist dictatorship.

Have those who tried to break free from this town been punished? Has anyone ever succeeded in getting away?

There have been punishments, yes. Six months ago, a riot was planned and carried out. Grady's response was to make us play a murder mystery game...one with us as victims or suspects.

And no one has succeeded in escaping. Occasionally, someone will be brainwashed, and when they return to normal, will tell of returning to their world in the meantime. But no one has escaped under their own power.
